Program Overview
Mass Communication is the study of mass media including all types of medium used to convey information to the audience. The graduates of Mass Communication programs work in a variety of fields in news media and publishing, public relations and research institutes. The field of communication requires a skilled and professional approach. This field is a fast growing industry looking for enterprising professionals.
Journalism is concerned with collection and dissemination of news through the print media as well as the electronic media. This involves various areas of works like reporting, writing, editing, photographing, broadcasting or cable casting news items.
Journalists play a major role in the development of nation. The purpose of journalism itself is to inform and interpret, educate and enlighten the people. Journalism and Mass Communication have spread wings in many areas that compile different sections of communications and public relations. Although these fields have had a remarkable presence from a long time, the real potential of them has gained credit in the recent days. Many job opportunities have opened for students completing a mass communications course in nearly all the fields of the business and industry. A career in journalism is a prestigious profession as well as a highly paid one if you play the cards right.
The opportunities for journalists are endless and at the same time the job has become more challenging, as the new world is proving the adage that “the pen (and the camera) is mightier than the sword.” Simple reporting of events is no more sufficient, more specialization and professionalism in reporting is required. Journalists specialize in diverse areas, such as politics, finance and economics, investigation, culture and sports for newspapers and periodicals.
Keeping this in mind, SMU-DE programs are specially designed for journalism aspirants to make a career in myriad areas of mass media and communication, and aims to impart comprehensive training for various professionals in print, radio, television, internet and corporate communication.

IAIT in collaboration with Sikkim Manipal University in Delhi and Dehradun has setup centers of excellence to provide quality education in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication through the Distance Education programs.
IAIT provides a Bachelors and Masters course in Journalism, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (BAJM) and Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (MAJM) in conjunction with Sikkim Manipal University.
Program Benefits and Goals
The program is geared towards realizing the following objectives -
- To provide intensive theoretical and practical knowledge in various media professions ranging from the management of media organization to research
- To provide an integrated perspective of media functioning along with a fair amount of exposure to technical know-how
- To hone the student’s analytical skills

Specializations
Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication | MAJM
Eligibility – For a regular entry a 3 year Graduation is required.
You are eligible for a Lateral Entry if you hold any of the following qualification degrees-
3 year Graduation with one year Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication or 1 year work experience in the field related to Journalism and Mass Communication thereafter.
Duration – 2 years (4 semesters).
Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication | BAJM
Eligibility – 10+2 or equivalent / 3 year Diploma from a State Board of Technical Education.
Duration – 3 years (6 semesters)
